The pro cycling world has been rocked by news this morning that Michele Scarponi has been killed in a training ride collission.
The Italian, who rolled back the years with a stage win the Tour of the Alps last week, was killed close to his home.
While details of the crash are only just emerging, early reports suggest he was hit by a driver at a crossroads. He was riding home to Filottrano in Le Marche after his ride.
Reports suggest the driver of the van did not see the Astana rider.
Scarponi appears to have been in a short recovery ride following the Tour of the Alps.
He was due to lead his Astana team in the Giro having once again last week takes success.
He not only won a stage in France but also took over the race leader’s jersey in the process.
His Astana team released a statement confirming his death, saying it was “a tragedy too big to be written”.
“Our athlete Michele Scarponi died this morning while he was training on his bike close to his home in Filottrano,” it said, adding he had been “hit by a van” at a crossroads.
“Born on September 25th, 1979, he left a wife and two kids. Michele ended 4th in the Tour of Alps yesterday afternoon in Trento.
“Then he went home in Filottrano (Ancona) by car with his masseur and was home in the evening to his family.
“This morning Michele went out on his bike for an early morning training and there the tragedy happened.
“We left a great champion and a special guy, always smiling in every situation, he was a real mile stone and a landmark for everyone in the Astana Pro Team.
“The Astana Pro Team clings to the Michele family in this incredibly painful moment of sorrow and mourning.”
The 37-year-old was a former Giro d’Italia winner, having claimed the overall title in 2011, after Alberto Contador was stripped of the victory for doping.
Scarponi also took the points jersey that year and had won three stages in the race.
In the same year he won the Volta a Catalunya and the Giro del Trentino. And two years earlier, in 2009, he had claimed the Tirreno-Adriatico title.

He then rode for Lampre–ISD between 2011 and 2013. And had been with Astana since 2014.
